Skye Jones
Young Explorer
Skye is an environmental anthropologist exploring the stories of seaweed and their connections to coastal communities through research, artistic practices, foraging and storytelling.
Skye is an environmental anthropologist enchanted by the world of seaweed. She follows their journeys through the tides, exploring how they shape coastal communities and connect to food, medicine, rituals, folklore, and everyday life. To her, seaweed is more than a resource, they are living beings, sources of wonder, creativity, and a connector between humans and the more than human world.
Growing up between a quiet town in North Wales and the sunny shores of Miami, Skye spent much of her time outdoors and in botanic gardens. Her fascination with seaweed began during her undergraduate studies in Scotland and deepened through a master's at University College London. She loves embarking on quests in her blue campervan, Doris, swimming in the sea, gathering stories, chatting with strangers, and collecting and drying flowers along the way.
She is a seaweed forager and experimental cook (most proud of her kelp lasagna) and when out of the water also enjoys sketching, boxing, dancing, DJing, and getting lost in epic fantasy novels over a cup of coffee. She lives on a canal boat in London, continuing her exploration of aquaculture, art, and seaweed farming, and plans to pursue a PhD to keep following the stories of the sea.
