Johnny Rampley-Sturgeon

Young Explorer

Johnny is a British boatbuilder and documentary journalist who specializes in maritime storytelling.

Johnny grew up sailing with his grandpa aboard a 28' pocket cruiser, Heligog, and was raised on stories of the wild and watery rogues of the high seas. He has been captivated by maritime storytelling ever since. After graduating from the University of Oxford in 2022, he spent twenty months in Whitby, Yorkshire, working in a boatyard renovating a former oil-rig lifeboat into a tiny home.

Johnny is currently a Fulbright Scholar studying documentary filmmaking at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism. His past work has covered flood-prone communities in New York's Jamaica Bay, and he is currently co-producing a documentary about elderly liveaboards facing eviction. When not at sea or filming, Johnny can be found hiking, camping, and climbing.
