Joe Tulurialik

Inuit Cultural Educator, Musician

Joe is a lifelong hunter, fisherman, and musician who finds joy in his cultural traditions, music, and the changing seasons.

Joe is a fulltime hunter, fisherman, and musician who love to play guitar. Music has always been an important part of Joe and his family’s lives for generations. It is very much a part of his family and cultural upbringing. Both he and his father began playing guitar at the age of twelve. For Joe, music is a place of solace and something he returns to, to find himself again.

Joe enjoys following his cultural traditions by hunting and fishing. These are a large part of his life and connection to the Arctic. Depending on the season, trips can range from a single day to several days or weeks, and the activities and travel change.

Although he says every season is his favourite, the time that excites him most is early fall, when the sea ice first begins to form, and it is time for the seal hunt.

Joe is Netsilingmiut, which means “people of the place where there is seal.” This connection to the ringed seal, the land, sea ice, hunting, fishing, and the changing seasons is an important part of his cultural roots.

One of the things he enjoys most about expedition travel is meeting people from around the world, learning about their cultures and ways of life, and discovering the similarities they all share regardless of where they come from.
