Dr. Jon Dickson

Geologist

Jon is a geologist/earth scientist who is passionate about why a landscape looks like it does, and how water, ice, wind, and fire—and humans—shape it.

Dr. Dickson, but preferably Jon, grew up near Vancouver, BC, and has since spent several years travelling around the world—and several more years living in various places, including Australia, New Zealand, China, Canada, USA, Iceland, and the Netherlands, where he completed his PhD in marine ecology, specializing in biogenic reefs and marine restoration. However, his heart remains in the mountains and along rocky coasts, so he recently fled Holland for rockier environs.

In his travels, Jon has looked at a few rocks, from Antarctica to Greenland, from Mongolia to the Canadian Shield, and from the East African Rift Valley to Iceland. However, rather than being concerned with their origin, he is most interested in how these rocks, and their character, have made the landscape what it is today—and what processes shape the land now, and in the future.

When he is not guiding aboard ships, Jon can be found living in Scotland with his two dogs, where he runs a marine restoration company. When not at work, he also enjoys spending time in the mountains looking at rocks, but also hiking, skiing, snowshoeing, mountaineering, camping, and/or running away from midges.
