Breana Sanders
Researcher-in-Residence
Breana is an Arctic researcher passionate about marine mammal conservation and understanding how shipping impacts Arctic ecosystems and communities.
Breana is a master’s student in environmental sustainability at the University of Ottawa, where she studies ship-source underwater noise and its impacts on Arctic marine ecosystems. Her research focuses on the Northwest Passage and explores how increasing vessel traffic overlaps with marine mammal habitats and culturally significant marine areas identified by northern communities.
Originally from Montréal, Breana’s work combines GIS, marine conservation, and Arctic research to better understand how climate change and shipping are affecting northern environments and communities. She is particularly interested in marine mammals, underwater noise, shipping, and the relationship between people and ecosystems.
Breana is passionate about making research approachable and enjoys sharing her work through conversations. She values opportunities to learn from others and is especially interested in the connections between science, conservation, and policy.
Outside of research, Breana enjoys travelling, hiking, cooking, wildlife conservation, and spending time outdoors. She loves exploring new places, meeting new people, and learning about different cultures and environments.
