Project: Investigating the Poetry of the Irish-American Diaspora

Caroline is passionate about poetry. Hailing from Menlo Park, California, Caroline wrote her first poem on the second day of sixth grade. She has been writing ever since. Caroline followed her love of language to the University of Pennsylvania, where she studied English and Creative Writing. The peak of her Penn experience was winning the Terry B. Heled Travel & Research Grant to hike over one hundred miles of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage in Japan.

Her project investigated the intersection of poets and pilgrims, the last legacy of Matsuo Basho. Caroline is incredibly excited to continue her poetry research by circumnavigating Ireland this summer. Her project is about the poetry of the Irish-American diaspora and in memory of her grandmother Moira Flanagan. An aspiring travel writer, Caroline looks forward to reconnecting with her Irish roots and learning more and Irish literature.
