Arrival and Orientation
Our High Arctic birding tour begins in the evening in Leduc, just south of Edmonton, Alberta, and close to the airport. We meet for dinner at 6:30 PM for a meet-and-greet and for a brief introduction and orientation. We’ll overnight in Leduc.
Elk Island National Park
We first visit several local lakes for an introduction to species of central Alberta. Next we head to Elk Island National Park, where over two hundred species of birds have been identified. The park is also home to forty-four species of mammals, including bison, wapiti (elk), moose, and more.
In mid-afternoon, depending upon reports from naturalists, we may head north of Edmonton to the edge of the boreal forest. Once again we overnight in Leduc.
We begin with our flight to Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. Here we’ll explore boreal habitats in the Great Slave Lake area. A highlight, weather permitting, will be a boat ride on an arm of Great Slave Lake. We’ll also head up the Yellowknife River, and tour among the house boats and islands of the bay. The city has several interesting stores, which we’ll also visit.
Flight to Iqaluktuuttiak (Cambridge Bay)
We’ll spend the morning birding around the Yellowknife area before taking an afternoon flight to Iqaluktuuttiak.
Here we’ll spend the rest of the day getting our bearings about town, keeping an eye out at all times for the local bird species here. We’ll spend the night in Iqaluktuuttiak (Cambridge Bay.)
Iqaluktuuttiak (Cambridge Bay)
We’ll make daily excursions from our home base. One is to the base of Mount Pelly, (providing the road is passable). On another day, we’ll travel to Dease and Simpson Straits. We’ll be watching for ringed seals hauled up on the ice.
Along Dease Strait, we'll tour an ancient Inuit hunting site. We’ll visit the local information centre for souvenir shopping. On Day 10, we’ll fly to Yellowknife, then on to Edmonton. We’ll spend our last night in Leduc.
Our high Arctic birding tour concludes today, as you make your way home according to your independent travel arrangements.
