nest in the corral of Lonesome George earlier this month. George is
the last known Pinta Island Tortoise in the world. He lives at the
Giant tortoise-breeding centre on Santa Cruz Island in Galapagos.
Researchers are attempting to breed George with two females of the
closely related Geochelone becki species of Giant Tortoise. Since July
three nests have been found and a total of 16 eggs are in incubation.

George is the only tortoise left of his species, which is why he received the
nickname of "lonesome." He was found on Pinta Island in 1972 by a group
of GNP rangers who were goat-hunting. Since that time, the Galapagos
National Park, with scientific support from the Charles Darwin
Foundation, have explored various options to encourage George to mate.
Their efforts had been unsuccessful until now.

Visit the Giant
tortoise-breeding center on Santa Cruz Island with Adventure Canada on
our Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands Expedition. Just in time to
escape the winter blues we head to the equator this January and
February to experience the unrivaled natural splendour of the famous
island archipelago.

Two departures: January 23-Feb 2 and January 30 - February 9, 2009. For more information please click here
this adventure. It is a sunny, spring like day in Vancouver and I look
completely inappropriate for the balmy day this is. I am wearing
pants, a long sleeved tee shirt, a hoodie, thick socks and hiking
boots...some of my heaviest clothes. There is a weight restriction of
20kg for our luggage. And I have been obsessed with this as I packed on
the weekend. I weighed everything I am taking on a kitchen scale and I
save a whole kilogram and a half by wearing the heavy stuff, but man,
it's warm. As I sit here in Seat 13C, I notice a young woman
struggling with her luggage. She is also not dressed for the weather of
the day. Perhaps she, too, is heading to the Arctic.

To read more of Shelagh's log please click here.

Also follow along with Marion Botsford Fraser's blog on our Walrus Expedition by visiting the Walrus Magazine website: http://www.walrusmagazine.com/blogs/category/arctic/
From the day the first issue of The Walrus appeared - and quickly sold out - people said it just wouldn't work. A magazine focusing on ideas and creating debate? Sophistication and wit? Long-form journalism? A place for readers, writers, and artists to meet? "Nice idea," they said. "But it won't fly in Canada. Country's too small. There aren't enough readers."
On September 22nd, the special fifth anniversary issue of The Walrus
hits newsstands nationwide, proving the naysayers wrong and delivering more award-winning content to a paid circulation of more than 60,000 smart, dedicated readers.

Follow along with Marion Botsford Fraser's blog on Adventure Canada's Walrus Expedition, in partnership with the Walrus Magazine, by visiting http://www.walrusmagazine.com/blogs/category/arctic/
