Polar Dip has poetic spin

It was a poetic plunge for many dippers who raced off the shores of Lake Promenade Park today.
About 30 dippers were met with rain and temperatures above 3C as they braved the icy waters of Lake Ontario for the annual Robbie Burns Polar Dip charity fundraiser.
Now, in its second year, the event, hosted by Port Credit travel tour operators Adventure Canada, brought out about 60 local musicians, academics and writer in celebration of the famed Scottish poet's birthday.
"Canada is a cold country, Scotland is a damp one. What better way to celebrate a fine poet than a Mississauga polar plunge on Robbie Burns' birthday," said Adventure Canada President Matthew Swan, who was the mastermind behind the event.
This year, proceeds raised will be donated to Doctors Without Borders to help with the relief efforts in Haiti.
Adventure Canada announced that they'll be matching all donations made during the event.
Last year, it raised about $500 for local charity EcoSource and its environmental education programs for youth, adults and family.

We ask that all dippers to contribute a $5 donation to Distress Centre Peel.

When Adventure Canada President Matthew Swan was interviewed about this upcoming event, he got excited, so excited that he provided numerous print-worthy quotations. These quotations were so notable that we've included them all:

If that isn't inspiring enough, here are some more reasons for you to take the dip next Sunday:

Bathing in cold water is not new - the Romans adopted the practice as a cure for stomach problems and headaches. It is believed to supercharge the system, improve breathing and muscle tone and decrease fatigue, and has also been claimed by some participants to improve thyroid function and skin tone, and aid constipation. Other evidence illustrates its benefits as a
performance enhancer.

THE FINESS PROGRAM (Females In Natural Earth and Social Sciences)

a week of no limits and new frontiers join Archaeologist Latonia
Hartery for a Newfoundland expedition designed to encourage girls to
explore the natural and cultural world while acquiring skills to
develop an empowering future.

The AARA and the Big Droke
Foundation announce their 2009 summer program for young girls called
the FINESS Program (Females in Natural Earth and Social Sciences). This
is a mentorship program that teaches young females leadership
qualities, new skills in the fields of science, history, art and
culture, as well as encourages a connection between youth, adults, and
elders. The program occurs over the course of a week in Bird Cove-Pond
Cove region in scenic Northern Newfoundland and focuses intensively on

Ian Tamblyn Announces His 30th Album!

Ian
Tamblyn is currently working on his thirtieth album of songs. The Cd
will be called Gyre, and will be released in the summer of 2009. Gyre
is co-produced by Scott Merritt in Guelph. As well Ian is producing a
cd by songwriter Chris Maclean . This summer Ian will be seen at
several folk festivals as well as joining Adventure Canada on their Out
of the Northwest Passage this summer.

Come And Experience The Many Colours of Pat Fairhead!

The Lodge Gallery on Amhurst Island is pleased to announce a major new presentation of water colours.

The
show titled "North of 70" opens May 16, 2009 and runs through to June
24. This show consists of 30 new works by Canadian artist Pat
Fairhead, which are based on her adventures and experiences on
Adventure Canada's High Arctic Expeditions in 2007 and 2008 between 70
degree and 80 degree north latitude.

The show opens on May 16
at 2 p.m. with a reception and artist's presentation. For further

Build A House For Community Birds!

Visit
the Columbia Valley Botanical Gardens in Invermere BC for a spring
morning in the Community Greenhouse on April 18th, 2009 from 10am-1pm,
where recycled material will be used to decorate birdhouses. The
birdhouses will be built by the high school construction class and then
decorated during the workshop. All birdhouses will be judged at the
Pynloges Cultural Centre during Wings week and then donated to the
community for distribution around the community, such as the Community
Greenhouse and Heritage Garden. All creativity and ages are welcome. If
you have recycled material that you would like to bring along or donate
please do so.

Pouch Cove Fundraising Art Auction & Party

Adventure
Canada is excited to let you know about the upcoming Pouch Cove
Fundraising Art Auction & Gallery which features work from
Drawnonward, a group of artists who have travelled with Adventure
Canada over the past four years.

2009 marks the twentieth year of the Pouch Cove Foundation's Artist Residency Program on the edge of the North Atlantic.

They have survived solely through the generosity of the participating artists and friends who appreciate our efforts.

As
always there will be lots of prints, paintings and photographs on
offer, all kindly donated by Canadian and International artists.
Some can be seen on the http://www.pouchcove.org web site. Some art will only be available at the auction.So you have to come to the auction to see it all!

The auctioneer is Ritchie's irrepressible Perry Tung. The gorgeous food is by Carmelite Catering, the alcohol
will
flow freely so we urge attendees to take the street car or taxi. An
after party will be hosted at The Brass Taps (College and Dovercourt).

Tickets are $20 and are available at the door or by calling 1-800-563-9100.
