Guests aboard the grounded M/V Clipper Adventurer all arrived safely back in Edmonton. Shortly after 14:00 on the 30th of August, passengers and staff entered the Edmonton Airport and were brought to the Adventure Canada comfort centre located at the Executive Royal Inn near the Edmonton Airport. Guests lunched and were assisted with travel arrangements home.

Unfortunately, the remainder of the 2010 Clipper Adventurer season is cancelled. We looked forward to sailing aboard her again next year.

At approximately 1910 local time (GMT-7) on August 27th, 2010

MV Clipper Adventurer, en-route from Port Epworth to Kugluktuk NU, was grounded on an uncharted rock at 67 58 N 112 40 W. At the time the seas were calm, sunny conditions and good visibility with no wind or swell.

Efforts of the vessel's crew to dislodge the vessel during high tide on August 28th were unsuccessful.

The vessel now rests with a slight list. Conditions are stabilized. All passengers and crew are safe and unharmed. Weather remains favourable as passengers continue to enjoy onboard programming and hospitality.

Canadian authorities have been notified and the Canadian Coast Guard Vessel Amundsen is en-route set to arrive 0900 August 29th to assist with disembarking passengers.

Flight arrangements have been made to ensure passengers return to Edmonton for the evening of August 29th.

• Despite it's name, you'll experience gargantuan icebergs almost everywhere in Greenland

Chris
Cormier - The Climate Rap

Congratulations, Chris Cormier, winner of Adventure Canada's Arctic Apprenticeship Contest! For the past few months young scholars from around the world have been submitting youtube videos highlighting climate change and
its importance to today's youth. The response was overwhelming, and many thoughtful and entertaining entries were received. The "Climate Rap" however took home the grand prize of a voyage this summer through the Northwest Passage.


Chris is a 15-yr-old student who attends Manchester High School West in Manchester, New Hampshire, where he will be a junior in the fall. Chris is interested in the Science and Medical fields, is a member of his High School's Environmental and Chemistry clubs as
well as the track, and cross country teams. His hobbies include skiing, travelling, hiking and being outdoors. We look forward to getting to know Chris better as we sail through the Northwest Passage this August.

Some of you were lucky enough to travel
with Andrew on 2009's Into the Northwest Passage Expedition.

Andrew's
works have been included in every Pangnirtung print
collection, and he is well-known throughout the North for his design of
the Nunavut flag and the territory's coat-of-arms and official logo.

This
exhibiton marks the donation to the Gallery of a complete
collection of 140 of Qappik's catalogued and uncatalogued ("personal")
prints by Dr. H.G. Jones, a past traveller and long-time friend of
Adventure Canada.

It's an important first
solo exhibition for this respected artist, and features a selection of
limited-edition prints spanning his graphic career. It is another in a
series of WAG exhibitions of second- and third-generation Inuit artists
who are expressing personal and contemporary concerns.

Robert Poulton was awarded this month with a "Best Editorial
Series Photography" by the industry magazine "Applied
Arts"
and will be featured in the new issue of the magazine. The recognized
series was a collection of portraits of the Inuit and included photos
of our very own Pakak Innuksuk and Aaju Peter captured during Adventure
Canada's High Arctic Adventure 2009.  You'll also notice many of his

new scientific book has been produced by Springer Publishing, titled
A
little less Arctic: top predators in the world's largest northern
inland sea, Hudson Bay. It focuses on marine mammals and birds in
Hudson Bay, and the current
and expected effects of climate change on their ecology.  Two AC
resource staff, Mark Mallory and Pierre Richard, have written
chapters in the book, and Mark was one of the three editors.  If
you're interested in delving into some of the science on climate
change, polar bears, whales and murres, this book is written by
experts on these topics in Canada.  Information on the book is

Grandfather
and Grandson

Mannumi Shaqu

Perhaps best known for his carvings of large standing
bears, Mannumi Shaqu began carving as a teenager and continued as an
artist to support his family.

In 1951, the Government of Canada
commissioned a Mother and Child by Mannumi as a coronation present for
the Queen to be, Elizabeth II, a sign of the recognition Inuit art would
receive globally.

Mannumi had fond memories of his childhood,
often following his grandfather on hunts to feed the camp. This piece,
'Grandfather and Grandson' captures the close bond these family members
share, reflecting on his own memories of his grandfather.  This is among
the last pieces he carved, at the age of 91 and nearly blind, a
testament to the spirit and skill of this remarkable artist.

Tin of Ox
Cheek soup during analysis

Two weeks ago, special guests of the Royal Ontario Museum who
are travelling on our Into the Northwest Passage Expedition had an
exclusive tour of the museum and of the museum vault, lead by ROM
Anthropologist Ken Lister.

In
the Anthropology collection of the Royal Ontario Museum is a tin of
Ox Cheek Soup dating to the early 1850s that was part of the
provisions for one of the Franklin Search Expeditions. The tin was
manufactured with the same method and materials as the tins carried
in the holds of Franklin's ships. In 1988 Kenneth Lister removed the
soup contents of the tin because the can was failing and the soup was
subsequently frozen for future research. Brandi Lee MacDonald at
McMaster University has analyzed the soup and found the soup to
contain lead at a dangerously high concentration. The tin was also
analyzed and as expected the solder used to
manufacture the tin has a high lead content.


The
soup, however, was in the tin for 136 years and it is not known how
quickly the lead would have leached into the soup. Did it happen
almost immediately or was it a slow process? This is now the
important question and it is being addressed with an 1850 recipe.
Together, Kenneth Lister and Brandi Lee MacDonald cooked up a vat of
ox cheek soup (Figure 3) and canned the soup in mason jars. Placed
within each jar was a length of lead solder and at regular intervals
over six months the jars will be opened and tested for lead
contamination. And now this summer as we walk along the shore of
Beechy Island and pass by the graves of Franklin's men, we may
finally know if in the early months of the expedition preserved food
was
a significant source of lead and perhaps one of the root causes for
the expedition's failure.

Gjoa
Haven town visit 2009

Visitors
to Gjoa Haven in Nunavut will now have both an Inuit and European
perspective on the Northwest Passage, which will aid in understanding
the history of the area, Mayor Joanni Sallerina told the Northern
News Service.

"I
think having the Inuit background on the signs will really help
promote a better understanding of Inuit culture and history," he
said.

Signs
along Gjoa Haven's Northwest Passage trail were upgraded last
September to help reflect the history of the passage in an Inuit
context, said Becky Torretti, regional co-ordinator with Nunavut
Parks and Special Places.

The
signs provide information about the Nattilik Inuit both before and
during the time Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen stopped in the Gjoa
Haven area while journeying through the Northwest Passage.

Across the province events are planned to help you discover
solar energy and opportunities you have to bring solar to your home or

In Invermere BC, Greenman Sustainable Solutions is
conducting two events over two days and we would enjoy the opportunity

can learn about the solar technologies and other green features of the
Community Greenhouse at David Thompson Secondary School from 10 am to
2pm.  Students and staff at DTSS will be involved in tours and

Dr. Hartery!

Dr.
Latonia Hartery and supervisor Dr. Brian Kooyman following the sucessful
defence of her thesis

Latonia
Hartery, AC's Archaeologist extraordinaire, successfully defended her
thesis on May 3!

Her thesis entitled Middle Dorset Paleoeskimo
Warm Season Adaptations in Newfoundland and Labrador assesses the
cultural change that occurred when these ancient people moved into
Newfoundland, from their former Arctic homeland, 1900 years ago. Once
thought to mostly rely on seals, she was able to show that their economy
expanded to include an incredible variety of birds such as cormorants
and the great auk, a plethora of plants not available in the Arctic, as
well significant amounts of caribou, beavers, hares, black bears,
wolves, fish (even tuna) and shellfish!

Her dissertation was
called "ground breaking'' as well as "a manuscript which will be
considered a classic for future researchers" by her defense committee
who gave her the highest pass-level possible for Ph.D.'s granted by the
University of Calgary.

The Walrus

Grolar or
Pizzly Bear

For
thousands of years, continental-sized barriers of sea ice have
separated
various
species of marine mammals, but Brendan P. Kelly, a marine biologist
with
International
Arctic Research Center at University of Alaska in Fairbanks,
suggests that as this summer ice melts away for good, these
species
will have to go to great lengths to survive, including creating new
hybrid
species.


Examples
of this kind of interbreeding, which is more possible between marine
mammals than among some other species are already accumulating, said
Kelly,
who has been documenting the evidence.

Recent
examples have occurred in the Canadian Arctic, including the 2006
discovery
of
a "Pizzly" or "Grolar" Bear in the wild - made possible by
warmer
climates and an extended ice-free season that have brought the
Grizzly
bear
into northern territories and forced Polar Bears to spend more
time
on land. Other recent examples have included a Narwhal/Beluga and
Harp/Hooded
seal
hybrids.

"We
may hang on to a lot of polar bear genes, they'll just be hidden in
the
grizzly
bear population. They'll still be bears- but they won't be the
polar
bears
we have known," Kelly said.

On
Adventure Canada's Into the Northwest Passage voyage in 2009, they
encountered
several
Grizzly Bears in Bathurst Inlet, Nunavut, an area also
known
for Polar Bears.

Thirty-eight odd new fish
species have been spotted off the coast of Greenland. 

Ten of the species new to
Greenland are new to science too. All 38
were discovered since the last such survey in 1992.

Rising ocean
temperatures due to global warming-which could be drawing unfamiliar
fishes to the region-and increased deep-sea fishing may be responsible
for the spike in fresh fish faces seen off Greenland, according to the
study, published in February in the journal Zootaxa.

we set out on a southerly route visiting Greenland's Capital, Nuuk
before crossing the border into Canada.  We'll visit the Inuit regions
of Nunavik and Nunatsiavut and have our breath taken away by two amazing
national parks - Mealy Mountains and Gros Morne.

Adventure Canada is excited to now be offering an optional
pre-embarkation day tour to hike in the beautiful Gros Morne National
Park! 

It has been said that: 'Gros Morne is to geology what the
Galapagos are
to biology.' A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the landscape is one of
spectacular landlocked, freshwater fjords and glacier-scoured headlands
in an ocean setting.

Departing on September 24, our day will be spent exploring this
outstanding
environment. We will have the opportunity to visit the tablelands,
where we can view one of the world's best examples of the process of
plate tectonics. Those looking to stretch their legs can enjoy a
lengthy hike to the coast and be rewarded with spectacular cliff top
views. The two dominating landscapes, coastal lowland and alpine
plateau provide habitat for an array of flora and fauna: moose, woodland
caribou and giant Arctic hare, as well as over 30 species of wild
orchids. We can find boreal, arctic and temperate species all in one
compact geographic region. All of this diversity and a stunning
backdrop to boot, Gros Morne is a place to be appreciated.

festival in Iqaluit!

Organizers of the
Alianait
Arts Festival are gearing up for 11 days (and nights) of celebrating the
arts
from June 21 to July 1, 2010, and Adventure Canada travellers are
joining the
volunteer team!

Executive Director, Heather Daley participated on
our
High Arctic cruise in 2009 and she made some great new friends through
AC.
 Two of these AC friends, Rae Wander and Janet Alilovic, are flying to
Iqaluit to volunteer for the Festival.

Arctic
Quest: Bowhead Whales of Isabella Bay

Imagine
yourself on the bow of the
ship and everywhere you look, you can see the magnificent and
awe-inspiring
bowhead whale. That was what passengers on the 2008 Baffin Expedition
were lucky
enough to experience.
 
Adventure Canada's newly announced
2010 Arctic Quest will be re-visiting Isabella Bay enroute to the tiny
community of Clyde River.
 
Isabella Bay is a pristine late
summer and fall feeding and resting stop-over for a large proportion of
the
threatened Davis Strait-Baffin Bay bowhead whale population. Isabella
Bay (or
Nigingnaniq) was designated a National Wildlife Area in 2008 and is a
336,000
hectre marine region on Baffin Island that is a crucial feeding area for
threatened
bowhead whales. The area includes two deep offshore troughs that are
rich in
copepods, a main source of food for the 18 metre long, 70 tonne bowhead
whale. As we sail through beautiful Isabella
Bay, you'll want to be on deck as we hope to catch a glimpse of these
massive
marine mammals.

Hairy bees and vegetarian
black flies are just a few of the quirky
creepy-crawlies that can be found throughout the North and while insect
lore is a topic that makes many squeamish, Carolyn
Mallory is fascinated by the tiny creatures and the ways which they
adapt to the harsh Nunavut climate.

Carolyn is in the final stages of her book titled "Common
Insects of Nunavut", which will identify bees, butterflies and
everything in between.
